In September 2017, the Coastal Environmental Baseline Data Program was launched as part of the National Oceans Protection Plan. The program provides $ 50.8 million over five years to collect biological and oceanographic data to characterize the current state of six major coastal ecosystems in Canada. Coastal ecosystems were chosen because of their high level of maritime traffic and coastal development, or their potential for increase. These selected ecosystems are the Port of Vancouver, British Columbia, the Port of Prince Rupert, British Columbia, the St. Lawrence Estuary, Quebec, the Port of Saint John, New Brunswick, Placentia Bay. , in Newfoundland and Labrador, and Iqaluit, in Nunavut.
