Soony Weems scored 24 points as the Guangdong Southern Tigers eased past the Shanxi Loongs 131-106 in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) here on Thursday.
Marshon Brooks added 18 and Du Runwang had 16 for Guangdong. Jamaal Franklin notched 22 points for Shanxi.
Weems, who played only 14 minutes, was on fire from the first second of the game, scoring eight points to gift Guangdong a 10-0 run. The defending champions led 43-19 at the end of the first quarter.
Guangdong continued the momentum and increased its advantage to 73-43 and almost killed the game before the halftime break.
Shanxi fought hard to cut the deficit to 104-78 in the third quarter but the gap was still too huge. The last quarter saw the two sides both send young players to the court and the game turned to into a training session.
“Shanxi played several good games this season and we respect them. We gave them pressure on defense and cut off the link of their attacking system,” Guangdong’s coach Du Feng said after the game.
“Our veterans built a huge lead in the first half and that allowed young players to play more time in the second. Some players made their debuts and they played well and I hope they can grow up soon,” he added.
