The Development Bureau and the Water Supplies Department today launched a public consultation on the proposed amendments to the Waterworks Ordinance to enhance drinking water safety and water efficiency.

The bureau explained that a holistic review of the ordinance is necessary in view of the substantial developments and changes in internal plumbing systems and the plumbing trade since its enactment in 1974.

The proposed amendments cover areas including strengthening control of plumbing works and materials to further safeguard drinking water safety, a mandatory water efficiency labelling scheme for plumbing fixtures and water-consuming devices, and measures to prevent fresh water loss in private communal water mains.

The consultation will last for 90 days until February 3, 2021.

The bureau said it will thoroughly consider the views received before finalising the proposals.

People can submit their views by email, by fax at 2520 3256, or by post to the Water Supplies Department’s Legislative Review Unit.

Two online public forums will also be held on December 12, with registration closing on December 4.
