Sustainable stabilization of Iraq is in the German and European interests

The German Bundestag is expected to renew the mandate for the participation of German armed forces in the fight against IS and the training of Iraqi armed forces tomorrow, Thursday. The foreign policy spokesman for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, Jürgen Hardt, explains:

“The decision of the German Bundestag sends out a very important signal: Germany stands by its foreign policy responsibility and will continue to closely accompany Iraq on its way to stability and reconstruction. We want to support Prime Minister Al-Khadimi’s reform agenda and ensure that Iraq can increasingly ensure its own security and offer the population an economic perspective, especially in times of corona.

It is precisely for this reason that we will maintain our comprehensive commitment, which embeds the military contribution of our soldiers in the overall framework of our cooperation with Iraq. This also includes extensive development policy engagement, support for reconstruction and humanitarian aid. In addition, Germany continues to be prominent diplomatically in the anti-IS alliance.

With the renewed mandate, we are also making a clear commitment to our responsibility towards the alliance. The current mandate enables our soldiers to work on a much larger scale and with greater flexibility within the framework of the NATO mission in Iraq. This was always a wish that NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg brought to us and that the CDU / CSU parliamentary group advocated.

With in-flight refueling by the Bundeswehr, German participation in AWACS surveillance flights and the air surveillance radar operated by Germany, Germany continues to bring important high-quality capabilities to the international alliance in support of Iraq.

For us as the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, one thing is certain: Iraq has a key role to play in stabilizing the entire region. The stabilization of Iraq is therefore in the interests of Germany and Europe. We want Iraq to be able to build on the positive regional dynamic that has opened up through Israel’s rapprochement with important states in the Arab world. “
