During the discussion at the expert session “Ecology and Trade” within the framework of the forum “Conjugation of the Eurasian Economic Union and the Chinese initiative” One Belt, One Road “, a significant potential for interaction in the field of climate was noted.
Participants of the expert meeting from the EAEU countries and China proposed a number of promising areas for interaction. Including the creation of a common legal framework for investments in reducing the energy and carbon intensity of production and renewable energy, as well as taking into account climatic factors in the EAEU strategic documents, including issues of climate risks, adaptation and joint implementation of climate projects.
According to Andrey Chaika, Deputy Director of the Department of Competition, Energy Efficiency and Environment of the Ministry of Economic Development of Russia, Andrei Chaika, the common market for the circulation of carbon units can be considered as the goal of unified climate regulation in the EAEU countries. To this end, it is advisable to converge approaches in terms of standards and taxonomy of climate projects and the possibilities of attracting green financing to these projects.
During the discussion, the issues of the unilateral introduction in Europe of the border correcting carbon mechanism were touched upon. The participants in the expert session expressed concern about this initiative in view of its possible restriction of trade between the countries of the region with the EU.
