Bogotá (Oct. 27/20). The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Claudia Blum, pointed out that this initiative has been prioritized by the national government and is part of the strategies contemplated within the National Development Plan 2018-2022.

“It has been the fruit of a work promoted by the Foreign Relations sector, enriched by the congressmen, co-authors and speakers, and other government entities.”

The project aims to promote safe, regular and orderly migration, with a human rights approach. The initiative adapts and updates scattered regulatory frameworks, to have a law in accordance with the current reality of Colombia as a country of origin, transit and recipient of migrants.

“For this reason, the project includes measures to assist Colombian migrants who require services or support abroad, even in situations of vulnerability. Likewise, programs to link them with the country and to accompany them when they decide to return, ”said the diplomatic chief.

He also pointed out that a comprehensive policy must adopt controls in the case of migrants who are in transit in the country. “So this project contemplates preventive measures and responses in risk situations such as migrant smuggling and human trafficking,” he said.

The project also recognizes that Colombia is a destination for migrants. Not only because of the Venezuelan crisis that has generated a massive exodus to Colombia, but also because of the arrival of foreign companies and investments accompanied by migrant workers at different levels.

The minister indicated that for this reason the project contains provisions for the social and economic integration, orderly and legal, of foreigners seeking to settle in the country, as well as Colombians who return, and also highlighted the measures that provide support to communities host.

On the other hand, the project addresses the situations of foreigners who require protection, with figures such as refuge, or the recognition of nationality in cases of statelessness.

Colombia must recognize the contributions of migration to the country’s development

During the meeting with the congressmen, the Chancellor said that, in general, the world recognizes the contributions of migration to the development of the countries and it is necessary that Colombia also recognize that reality.

“Colombian migrants contribute to their places of destination, but they also contribute to the development of the country in multiple ways. For example, they are a source of investment towards Colombia; they support their families with remittances; establish businesses that help promote our exports; They help to spread our cultural wealth; among other contributions. In the same way, foreigners who live here contribute to our economic, cultural and social growth ”, Minister Blum explained.

Finally, the diplomatic chief invited the senators to support and enrich the Comprehensive Migration Policy Project, “which opens up possibilities for us to tackle a phenomenon that is growing in this globalized world. Fact, against which our country has to update its legislation to take advantage of the opportunities and strengths that migration generates in the future ”.
