Bendigo Crime Investigation Unit detectives have released CCTV as they appeal for public assistance regarding a car fire from earlier this month.

A stolen Toyota RAV 4 was burnt in Ryalls Lane, Strathfieldsaye about 3am on 17 October.

The CCTV footage shows an unknown offender setting fire to a trail of accelerant which leads to the vehicle.

When the flames reached the vehicle it becomes engulfed and there was an explosion.

The offender is seen running away from the blaze to a light-coloured vehicle, believed to be a Toyota CH-R, and driving away from the scene.

Police have also released images similar to that of the vehicle that was burnt and the car that was driven away from the scene.

Anyone with information that could assist investigators with their enquiries is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
