The Party official made the statement at a conference held in Hanoi on October 26 by the Vietnam Association of the Elderly (VAE) to honour members of the association who stood out in its patriotic emulation movement in the 2015-2020 period.

She also applauded the VAE’s achievements in recent years, stressing that since it was founded 25 years ago, the association has carried out practical and effective activities to realise the aspiration, role and legitimate interests of senior citizens in Vietnam.

She acknowledged that the association has witnessed the increase not only in its number of members but also in the quality of its activities caring for the elderly, particularly national contributors and those aged 80 years and above.

The association and its members nationwide have actively participated in enhancing Party building, facilitating socio-economic development, and maintaining national security, she noted.

She asked Party committees, authorities, and fatherland front at all levels as well as organisations, families, and the entire society to observe the Law of the Elderly as well as Party and State’s guideline and policies on caring for elder people.

She also ordered ministries, sectors and localities to give priority to developing geriatric departments in medical facilities while adopting more policies to encourage the development of facilities on nursing and caring senior citizens in order to ensure that they are provided with equal opportunities to contribute to and benefit from national developmental achievements.

Meanwhile the VEA was requested to renovate its operation to improve its implementation of the National Action Program on the Elderly and pay greater attention to elder people with difficult living conditions in rural, mountainous, remote and isolated areas as well as those of ethnic minority origin.
