John Healey MP, Labour’s Shadow Defence Secretary, commenting on reports of a disagreement between the Chancellor and Prime Minster over the defence budget, said:
“Britain has a right to expect better from its Government. Our Armed Forces must not become the victims of personal power games between the Chancellor and Prime Minister.
“The Government has got to get its act together to produce fully-funded new defence plans because Britain’s enemies are stepping up their spending and their threats.
“At this time of evolving and escalating threats, the country can’t afford to have Ministers repeat the mistakes of the last two Tory defence reviews which were used as a cover for crude cuts to vital new hardware and troop numbers.“
