Nguyen Trong Dai became the hosts’ hero by scoring the only goal at Hang Day Stadium to secure them the full three points.
The victory lifted Viettel two points clear of defending champions Hanoi FC and gave coach Truong Viet Hoang’s side a big boost ahead of the Hanoi derby between the two teams this October 29.
The first half took place in a tedious manner as few opportunities were created by either side. Viettel produced a rare threat with Hoang Duc hitting the bar, while Ha Tinh left an imprint with a Bruno De Sousa shot that was easily blocked by goalkeeper Nguyen Manh.
After the break, the home side tightened their offence and almost opened the scoring twice, with Minh Tuan wasting a chance in front of an empty goal and Van Hao hitting the post.
In the 58th minute, Ngoc Trong Dai came off the bench to replace Vu Minh Tuan. The substitute lived up to Truong Viet Hoang’s expectations needing only 12 minutes to break the deadlock with a long-range strike.
After the opener, Viettel FC slowed their pace and played solidly to defend their advantage, leaving no further goals scored during the remainder of the game.
The victory has brought Viettel closer to the 2020 V.League 1 trophy as the season has just three matches left to go.
Saigon FC maintained hopes of lifting the title by crushing Hoang Anh Gia Lai 4-2 to move third three points behind leaders Viettel.
Second-from-bottom Nam Dinh FC lost 2-3 to Hai Phong FC at home, while Thanh Hoa played out a 1-1 draw with Song Lam Nghe An.
Bottom-placed Quang Nam FC took advantage of Nam Dinh’s failure to narrow their gap to just two points with a crucial 3-1 victory against SHB Da Nang.
