SKANEATELES, NY— In a ceremony this morning at Shotwell Memorial Park in Skaneateles, U.S. Rep. John Katko (NY-24) presented long overdue medals to two Central New York veterans, Mr. Joe Carfagno and Mr. Drew Deapo.
Both veterans were owed medals from their service, but had never received them. After contacting Rep. Katko’s office, the Congressman was able to work on their behalf to deliver the medals, and presented them today.
“It’s a distinct honor to help Central New York veterans acquire medals they are rightfully due, and to present them today,” said Rep. Katko. “I have the utmost respect and appreciation for our nation’s veterans, their families, and those continuing to serve. I will continue doing everything in my power to pay tribute to those who bravely served our country, and ensure they have the support they need.”
Rep. Katko presented the following awards today:
- Mr. Joe Carfagno, a Syracuse resident, is a U.S. Army Veteran who served in the Korean War. Mr. Carfagno served from June 1953 to May 1955, attaining the rank of Corporal upon his retirement. Today, Rep. Katko presented Mr. Carfagno with the Good Conduct Medal, which is awarded to Army enlisted personnel for exemplary conduct. Mr. Carfagno also received the National Defense Service Medal, which is awarded to all members of the military who serve on active duty in the United States Armed Forces during the Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, or the Global War on Terrorism.
- Mr. Drew Deapo, a Port Byron resident, is a U.S. Navy Veteran who served in the Vietnam War. Mr. Deapo served from August 1964 to August 1967. He then served in the Naval Reserves until August 1970, attaining the rank of E4 Boatswain’s Mate Third Class upon his retirement. Today, Rep. Katko presented Mr. Deapo with the Navy Unit Commendation, an award recognizing heroism and outstanding actions. Mr. Deapo also received the Vietnam Service Medal, theHonorable Reserve Discharge Button, and the National Defense Service Medal.
Rep. Katko was joined today by representatives from the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy in presenting the awards.
