Today, Saturday, October 24, 2020, the Uri state pilgrimage to Sachseln to the place of work of Brother Klaus in Flüeli-Ranft takes place. In view of the corona situation, the organizers of the state pilgrimage decided last week that the event would only take place on a small scale this year in order not to expose the pilgrims to any health risks. Representing the people of Uri, Dean Daniel Krieg, pastor of Altdorf, Landammann Urban Camenzind, Bürglen, and four members of the government council travel with Weibel to the state pilgrimage. Also there are the herdsmen parents Sepp and Regina Planzer as well as the caste governor Wendelin Bucheli from the brotherhood in Bürglen and representatives of the clergy.
Landammann Urban Camenzind gives a speech at the national pilgrimage in which he draws parallels to times long past, which were also characterized by threat and danger: «I do not take it for granted that we are here and thus help the deeply anchored custom of Uri national pilgrimage to be maintained even in difficult times and in an adapted way. We are here today for the entire indigenous people ”, he explains in the introduction.
It is not for nothing that the Bürglen Sennenbruderschaft is part of the national pilgrimage. This was founded in 1593 because of a major epidemic in the Uri Alps. “Already more than 400 years ago, the people of Uri had to find a way of organizing themselves in times of great need, what measures were taken and how to deal with the stress and uncertainty,” said the Landammann. Certainly, despair, uncertainty and rumors would have spread even then. The foundation of the Sennenbruderschaft with the purpose of solidarity among the affected alpine farmers and farmers helped a lot. For example, for mutual support and consolation in need.
Urban Camenzind compares the present, shaped by the corona pandemic, with the situation 427 years ago: “We have the corona virus, which causes great health and economic damage. Existences are at stake. Citizens are afraid and insecure. ” In the individualized society we are used to the fact that there is a solution to most of the world’s problems, now and immediately. In the case of Corona, this will take longer and we would have to stand together: «In the near future, we will have to use our energy and our strength for more important things. The argument about who is more right with which expertise is currently not worthwhile ». As Landammann, he appeals to the people of Uri: “Let us all help in solidarity to protect our community from this virus. Let us all stick to the known measures prescribed by the Federal Council. Let’s wear the necessary masks, keep enough distance and maybe wash our hands again ».
In view of the complex challenge posed by the pandemic, it is to be expected that many people will have doubts and that uncertainty will increase. In such situations, he recommended a hike in nature, to the pilgrimage chapel in Riedertal or to one of the many pilgrimage sites in the canton of Uri to get positive thoughts. The Landammann finally asked the participants in the national pilgrimage to stand together like the herdsmen more than 400 years ago: “Then I am confident that we will be able to undertake the Uri national pilgrimage together again next year and thank them together”.
