WASHINGTON, D.C.– Today, U.S. Representative Donna Shalala (FL-27) joined her colleagues as an original cosponsor of a bipartisan resolution denouncing the Maduro regime’s plan to hold elections in December 2020 for the Venezuelan National Assembly that will violate international standards of freedom, fairness, and transparency.

“The socialist, authoritarian policies of Nicolas Maduro have destroyed what was once the wealthiest country in South America and created the worst humanitarian crisis the Western Hemisphere has ever seen,” said Rep. Shalala. “These upcoming fraudulent elections seek to bury the last vestiges of Venezuela’s once thriving democracy and continue Venezuela’s descent into tyranny. The United States and the international community must continue to decry Maduro’s anti-democratic acts and work alongside the Venezuelan people to help to restore freedom and liberty to their country.”

The resolution, introduced by Rep. Mucarsel-Powell (FL-D) and Rep. Francis Rooney (FL-R), is a House of Representatives companion to a Senate resolution introduced earlier this week by Senators Robert Menendez (NJ-D) and Marco Rubio (FL-R). Shalala was joined by U.S. Reps. Val Demings (FL-D), Ted Deutch (FL-D), Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-R), Lois Frankel (FL-D), Al Hastings (FL-D), Stephanie Murphy (FL-D), Albio Sires (NJ-D), Darren Soto (FL-D), Michael Waltz (FL-R), and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-D).
