Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Tom Cole (OK-04) released the following statement after Burns Hargis announced his plans to retire as president of Oklahoma State University (OSU) on July 1, 2021.

“I want to offer my deepest congratulations and best wishes to my dear friends Burns and Ann Hargis, who have done a remarkable job at the helm of Oklahoma State University for more than a decade. I have always greatly admired their close partnership and shared desire to see OSU’s students and campus thrive. OSU is certainly better off because of the historic contributions they have made and improvements they have fostered together.

“Leading OSU as president has clearly been both a dream job and labor of love for Burns Hargis, who once attended the university himself. Throughout his distinguished public service to his alma mater, he has always led with a great deal of decency and civility. Indeed, his leadership has even fostered an era of unprecedented collaboration and cooperation between Oklahoma’s two flagship universities, a move which has been productive and valuable for both OSU and the University of Oklahoma.

“Although Burns and Ann will be greatly missed when they step down next summer, their legacy will be permanently felt on campus, by the surrounding communities and the state as a whole.”
