The official winter service period for operational maintenance on the Zug cantonal road network begins on November 1st. Due to the corona situation, special planning was necessary this year.
The coming winter with snow in the higher elevations of the canton of Zug was already announced at the end of September. From the beginning of November, winter conditions down to the lowlands can also be expected. From this point on, the road maintenance department of the civil engineering department is equipped for targeted winter service operations. These include clearing snow, combating ice and protecting against snow drifts on the cantonal roads and their sidewalks in and out of the municipalities. With the winter service, the prerequisites are created so that the roads can be driven safely with vehicles equipped for winter and with an adapted driving style.
Differentiated winter service But what if several drivers and therefore vehicles for the necessary winter service missions due to the corona situation? The civil engineering department of the canton of Zug checked the relevant scenarios in the summer and created a concept for an emergency. This takes into account a loss of staff of a maximum of 30 percent. The primary aim would be to use additional third-party drivers on the canton’s own vehicles. If this were not possible, the winter service operations would have to be reduced. The winter service would be maintained on the predefined main roads and on most cantonal roads on which buses run. The aim is to ensure that safety is largely guaranteed on the most important traffic axes. On some selected cantonal roads, snow removal would be suspended from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. during continuous operations. Necessary pre-wetted salt operations to combat the slipperiness would, however, continue to be carried out specifically and around the clock on all cantonal roads. The concept of the civil engineering office does not affect the winter service on the municipal roads.
The snow removal on the canton roads marked in blue would rest overnight in the event of a staff failure of a maximum of 30 percent. The winter service on the red marked routes could be guaranteed as before, with little standard loss.
