Credit: Renato Soares / MTurO Brasil will have 24 natural attractions certified with the Ecolabel of the Blue Flag Program in the next summer season. After deliberation by the program’s jury, of which the Ministry of Tourism is a part, 13 beaches and six Brazilian marinas were renewed and another five beaches received the seal for the first time. The analysis takes into account more than 30 requirements that must be met by the candidates. The beaches of the Reserve, in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), entered the list for the 2020/2021 season; Itacimirim, in Camaçari (BA); do Forte, in São Francisco do Sul (SC); da Conceição, in Bombinhas (SC); and Praia Grande, in the city of Penha (SC). (Check the complete list at the bottom of the page) This year, Brazilian destinations covered by the certification will be able to hoist the Blue Flag as of November 16 and must follow state and municipal decrees that affect the beach or marina area, in reason of the Covid-19 pandemic.To obtain certification, developed by the international non-governmental and non-profit organization FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education), the program analyzes water quality with periodic bathing tests, in addition to infrastructure, safety , accessibility and the communities’ commitment to the environment and the sustainability of tourist destinations. In addition to the MTur, the ministries of Education and Environment, the Secretariat of Heritage of the Union, the Nautical Association are also part of the jury of the Program in Brazil. The Brazilian Coastal Management Agency, the Fundação SOS Mata Atlântica and the Brazilian Society of Aquatic Rescue. Annually, the entities meet to check compliance with the criteria and decide on which beaches, marinas and vessels will be submitted to the international jury. ABOUT THE BLUE FLAG – The Blue Flag Program promotes sustainable development in freshwater and marine areas and challenges local authorities and beach managers to achieve high quality standards in four themes: water quality, environmental management, environmental education and safety. Over the years, the Blue Flag has become a highly respected and recognized eco-label working to bring together the tourism and environment sectors in a local, regional and international way.
