The overall Comprehensive Social Security Assistance caseload dropped to 225,958 last month, down 0.1% from August, the Social Welfare Department announced today.

The total number of recipients stood at 318,438.

Low-earnings cases registered a month-to-month decrease of 3.5% to 2,639. Single parent cases were down by 0.6% to 24,758 while old age cases fell by 0.3% to 132,379.

Ill-health cases rose 0.6% to 25,669 while permanent disability cases increased 0.3% to 17,348.

Unemployment cases rose 1.4% to 19,024 and the figure represented a rise of 57.2% year-on-year.

The number of applications for unemployment cases rose 25.1% to 1,162 in September, representing an increase of about 89.6% year-on-year.
