IOC President Thomas Bach praised Heinze as a “very committed member”. Born in Dresden in 1923, Heinze completed a degree in physical education at the German University of Physical Culture in Leipzig. In 1951 he was part of the national basketball team. From the mid-50s he worked as a sports official a. a. in the National Olympic Committee of the GDR, in the State Committee for Physical Culture and Sport at the Council of Ministers of the GDR, in the German Gymnastics and Sports Federation and in the national basketball association Günther Heinze was 97 years old.
