Source: Die Linke “We finally need effective protection against discrimination, which must be anchored in the constitution,” explains Gökay Akbulut, migration and integration policy spokeswoman for the DIE LINKE parliamentary group, with a view to the 12th integration summit. “As recently as February, Horst Seehofer had declared that after the terrible act in Hanau, making the fight against racism a top priority was the very least. The fact that he is not taking part in today’s integration summit shows that the federal government does not take the fight against institutional racism seriously. ” Akbulut continues: “Ms. Widmann-Mauz’s demand today, that unity in diversity must be promoted and demanded, in my opinion ignores the reality of life for people with migration and refugee backgrounds. Particularly during the pandemic, people in precarious circumstances are particularly strong affected by the corona crisis. This requires very clear and targeted support, in particular decentralized accommodation for refugees and more resources for language learning courses, especially digital offers. The losers in the education system are again the children, schoolchildren with a migration background. We finally need clear and real signals for participation for people who have been living in Germany for years. This means that the laws have to be based on reality, for that we need a law of participation. We need a law to promote democracy that guarantees real and lived participation. Here action must be taken at all levels, especially in schools and in the training of civil servants. You have a special responsibility. We need protection against discrimination on the labor and housing market, which is why the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) must finally be reformed. A holistic participation policy that includes all aspects and areas of life of people is needed. The introduction of local voting rights for non-EU citizens and a simplification of naturalizations should not be missing. Integration and participation cannot only be negotiated at a summit. Warm words are not enough, we finally need legal changes in Germany. “
