European hospitality data

Hospitality Results in other EU countries, see the Eurostat database. At the moment, data up to and including July 2020 are available for most countries.

Methodological notes:

The different comparison periods must be taken into account in all reports on economic indicators. The focus of the economic observation is the comparison with the previous month / quarter. The short-term economic development can be read from this. The comparison with the previous year serves as a long-term level comparison and is independent of seasonal fluctuations. In the current Corona crisis, the strong declines in particular in March / April 2020 and the slow recovery since then can lead to very different results compared to the previous month / quarter and the previous year. Both perspectives are important: How is the economic development compared to the previous month / previous quarter, and how far is the catching up process compared to the previous year’s level? In order to also enable a direct comparison to the pre-crisis level, a comparison to February 2020 and the 4th quarter of 2019 will be shown in all press releases on economic indicators, which are available calendar- and seasonally adjusted, for the time being.

The survey covers companies in the hospitality industry with a turnover of at least 150,000 euros per year. The Federal Statistical Office takes into account late reports from the surveyed companies and therefore continuously updates the first proven results.

The Revision tables provide information about the impact of the updates on the results.

The results of the hospitality statistics can deviate from those of the tourism statistics, especially in the summer months, because, for example, the turnover in the accommodation companies does not always coincide with the overnight stays. Methodological differences also lead to different results.

Further information can be found in the Explanations of the statistics and in the Quality reports to hospitality and tourism.

Long time series for monthly statistics in the hospitality industry can be found in the table Hospitality turnover (45213-0005) can be called up in the GENESIS-Online database.

In addition to other indicators for classifying the economic consequences of the corona pandemic, the results of the hospitality industry are also on the special page Corona statistics available on the website of the Federal Statistical Office.

German EU Council Presidency in the field of statistics Since July 1, the Federal Statistical Office has been in charge of the EU Council Presidency under the chairmanship of President Dr. Georg Thiel the Council Working Group on Statistics.
