Lesko Announces Congressional Art Competition Winners
SURPRISE, AZ—Today, U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Lesko (AZ-08) announced the winners of the 2020 Congressional Art Competition for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District.
“It is an honor to recognize the wonderful young artists throughout our district,” said Congresswoman Lesko. “We are so fortunate to have so many young people interested in the arts and I am so impressed by their talents. I offer my congratulations to the winners and my thanks to all who participated in this year’s competition.”
Evie Nguyen of Glendale, Arizona is the first-place winner for the 2020 Congressional Art Competition for Lesko’s District with her charcoal piece, “Mutual.” Evie is a 12th grade student at Deer Valley High School in Glendale, Arizona. Lesko met with Evie in her Surprise District Office to congratulate her on this tremendous accomplishment. Her artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.
Second place went to Anthony Ruan, an 11th grade student at Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale, Arizona for his oil painting, “Arizona Moon.” His artwork will be displayed in Congresswoman Lesko’s Washington, D.C. office for one year. “Arizona Moon” by Anthony Ruan, Second Place Winner
In third place is Destiny Banda, a 7th grade student from West Point Elementary School, in Surprise, Arizona, with her watercolor painting entitled “Colors of the Desert.” The piece will be displayed in Congresswoman Lesko’s Surprise District Office for one year. “Colors of the Desert” by Destiny Banda, Third Place Winner
Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.
