Crist Announces Nearly $150,000 in Grants to Protect Florida’s Iconic Manatees

St. Petersburg, October 14, 2020 St. Petersburg, FL – U.S. Representative Charlie Crist announced two grants totaling $149,674 to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, aiding in local efforts to rescue and rehabilitate Florida’s manatee population. Specifically, Clearwater Marine Aquarium will receive $77,879 to increase manatee rescue efforts through the use of new technology to expand capacity and collect health and life history parameters; and $71,795 to support the Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Partnership, enhancing transport capabilities and allowing for more sick or injured manatees to be treated and released back in the wild. The grants are funded through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) John H. Prescott Marine Mammal Rescue Assistance Grant Program, which provides financial support for the rescue, treatment, and rehabilitation of marine mammals. As a member of the powerful Appropriations Committee, Congressman Crist has fought for robust funding for agencies that protect Florida’s threatened and endangered wildlife. “Protecting Florida’s marine mammals, including the iconic manatee, is deeply important to the health of our environment and coastal communities here in Pinellas,” said Rep. Crist. “I commend Clearwater Marine Aquarium for their tireless work in protecting and caring for these gentle giants and am looking forward to seeing this grant money put to work.” Since arriving in Congress, Crist has been a proud advocate for protecting the Florida manatee.
