Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter, Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Environment Ministry, today inaugurates an innovative local heating network together with representatives of the city of Ettlingen. The “zeozweifrei” project was funded by the Federal Environment Ministry with around 4 million euros as part of the call for funding for investing municipal climate protection model projects. Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter: “Municipalities and municipal companies are key players in climate protection. I am pleased that climate protection was taken into account in the development of the musicians’ quarter from the start. The local heating network that was inaugurated today is a lighthouse project with which Ettlingen makes an exemplary contribution to climate protection and contributes to a significant reduction in greenhouse gases. ”The heat connection between municipal schools and adjacent residential buildings has been implemented over a route length of over one kilometer. The advantages of the systems can be optimally used through the innovative combination of various complementary generation systems and heat storage systems. The share of regenerative energy sources is around 97 percent. To supply the heat consumers, there is a solar thermal system with up to 300 collectors, an underground heating center with pellet boilers, a biogas-fired combined heat and power unit (CHP) with 50 kW electrical and around 100 kW Heat output and a gas peak load boiler with around 1,800 kW heat output are used. This saves around 2,000 tons of CO2 per year. Since 2016, the Federal Environment Ministry has been promoting and initiating exemplary municipal climate protection projects throughout Germany under the umbrella of the National Climate Initiative (NKI), which make a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. So far, around 40 lighthouse projects have been carried out in the municipal environment with around 100 million euros.
