Source: Republic of France in French The French Republic has issued the following statement:

Combined exercise IRON SPEAR, under the responsibility of the Canadian Command of the Enhanced Forward Battle Group Latvia (eFP BG LVA) is taking place this week at Camp Adazi in Latvia. Organized in the form of a Main battle tank (MBT) maneuver competition open to all nations contributing to NATO’s eFP operation, it allows MBT crews to compete for 48 hours , during fire and movement sequences, day and night.

Two Leclerc tank crews from the 501st Combat Tank Regiment (RCC) of Mourmelon-le-Grand (Marne) represent the combined arms subgroup (SGTIA) of the LYNX 8 mission. This exercise required careful preparation. crew of Lieutenant Christophe as well as that of Sergeant Mikael.

It was during an operation coordinated by the logistics detachment of LYNX 8, that the Leclerc tanks of SGTIA were previously loaded onto the Armored Carrier (PEB), to then proceed to the surroundings of Riga, the Latvian capital.

A Leclerc tank repairer (DCL), a heavy armored vehicle designed to recover and evacuate tanks over 50 tonnes, accompanies them. “We are leaving with two crews, plus a referent officer who will serve as a point of contact on the spot,” said Lieutenant Christophe. The young officer is impatient to take part in this challenge: “It is a course of fire, speed and skill, but it is also a chance to rub shoulders with our counterparts from the Allied nations and to discover their way of working. “

Upon their arrival at the Adazi camp, the two crews took charge of the deployment of collective weapons and the setting up of transmissions. The next day, they fired harmonization shots. Amid the deafening sounds of fire from the allied nations which followed, Captain Stéphane, coordination officer for the French detachment of the exercise, explains: “They are aligning their line of sight with their line of fire. They will make a setting fire of two shells at a distance of 1,500 meters to check that they are on target, in order to better prepare for the exercise. “

In total, the crews of 7 partner nations will compete against each other. The French will thus face the German, Spanish and Norwegian Leopard 2, the British Challenger 2, the Italian Ariete and the Slovak T-72M1.

At the end of these two days of competition, a static exhibition will bring together all the tanks involved. This event will be an opportunity for everyone to discuss the characteristics of their various armored vehicles, to appreciate their strengths and thus enrich their combined operational culture.

Decided by the heads of state and government at the Warsaw summit in 2016, NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) posture allows Allies to deploy, in limited numbers, military forces in countries Baltic and Poland. This non-permanent commitment aims to further strengthen the Alliance’s defense posture through a deterrent device, of a purely defensive nature, according to a collectively validated plan. In this context, France is committing to Lithuania in 2020 a system built around 300 French soldiers and an S-GTIA made up of 5 Leclerc tanks, 14 VBCIs and 5 VABs. This LYNX mission is integrated within a battalion commanded by Germany.
