Bogotá (Oct. 13/20). This Tuesday, the Foreign Ministers of the member countries of the Lima Group addressed the situation in Venezuela, in particular: the December elections convened without guarantees, the report of the UN Independent International Mission that reported on serious human rights violations and crimes in that country, the regime’s relations with criminal organizations, and the impact of COVID-19 and the Venezuelan migrant diaspora.

In this regard, Minister Claudia Blum assured that this meeting has special relevance for the Lima Group to express itself unequivocally on the Report of the UN International Mission on Venezuela, act in a coordinated and strategic manner in the face of the serious panorama of some fraudulent parliamentary elections, and stress the importance of international cooperation in responding to the migration crisis in the region.

During her speech, Chancellor Blum insisted on the importance of various international criminal justice bodies taking on the investigations into the cases denounced by the UN Independent Mission that could constitute crimes against humanity. “It is urgent that the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court advance with greater speed in its preliminary examination of the situation in Venezuela. This new UN Report adds to documents previously provided by various non-governmental organizations, world leaders, and the Organization of American States, and justifies that this Court proceed with the opening of the corresponding investigation, ”he emphasized.

During her speech, Minister Blum also reiterated Colombia’s call for the Lima Group to redouble efforts to address the root cause of this alarming and critical scenario, which is the breakdown of the constitutional order and the destruction of the Rule of Law. In Venezuela.

Chancellor Claudia Blum emphasized that the guarantees for free and transparent elections include: an independent electoral referee, impartial judicial authorities, an updated electoral roll, security for voters, freedom of the press, and guarantees for the plural exercise of political activity. In her speech, Foreign Minister Claudia Blum also stated that “The Lima Group should also call on the countries that continue to offer legitimacy and political and economic support to the dictatorship, to reconsider their position. Given the severity of the regime’s attack against the civilian population, all States must show solidarity with the millions of Venezuelans who are victims ”.
