The combined team of the Military Medical Academy climbed Elbrus. Cadets, officers and employees of the Academy took part in the Cup of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in mountaineering “Elbrusiada”, which was held in the village of Terskol of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic.
The Cup was organized with the aim of improving the geographical knowledge of the personnel of military organizations. In total, 9 teams from districts, types (arms) of troops (forces) and military educational organizations took part in the competition. Despite the fact that the members of the team of the S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy did not have professional mountain training with confirmation of the level, the credentials committee allowed our team to compete out of competition, taking into account all safety requirements.
On the eve of the ascent, the team members conducted comprehensive training at the Tabai thermobaric complex of the Academy’s research center. Already on the spot, in the Elbrus region, in the process of gradual adaptation with an increase in altitude from 3000 m to 5000 m, our participants showed a decent level of training in conquering Mount Elbrus.
During the expedition, with the aim of improving geographical knowledge, classes on the history of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic were held with the cadets of the academy. The team visited the memorial to the soldiers who died in the Elbrus region during the Great Patriotic War. In the local history museum of Pyatigorsk, members of the team learned the history of climbing the highest peak in Europe, the history of the emergence of the Caucasian mountain society and got acquainted with the biography of the first chairman of the society, Otto Antonovich Chechett, a professor at the St. Petersburg Medical-Surgical Academy.
During the preparation and conduct of the competition, a number of research activities were carried out to test and monitor the functional state of the team members using special equipment from the Research and Development Department of habitability of the SIC Academy.
