Motion for a resolution on levelling the playing field between European Union and third country producers

The European Parliament,

  having regard to Article 3(3) and (5) of the Treaty on European Union,

 having regard to Rule 143 of its Rules of Procedure,

A. whereas fair trade with third countries and poverty reduction are among the EU’s core values;

B. whereas the EU has much stricter occupational safety legislation and penalties for non-compliance than in third countries;

C. whereas the EU imposes fines of several thousand euros for pollution and non-compliance with climate-related regulations, while products produced in third countries are not covered by these regulations;

D. whereas the average corporate tax rate in the European Union is much higher than in some third countries;

E. whereas workers from third countries lack social guarantees and are exploited, which makes production cheaper there;

F. whereas the relocation of production to third countries is raising unemployment in the EU;

1. Calls on the Commission to prevent third-country producers from competing unfairly with local producers;

2. Calls for a strategy to limit the relocation of production to third countries.
