The 10 billion euro future fund strengthens the German start-up ecosystem

In an international comparison, Germany only ranks in the middle when it comes to financing start-ups and innovative business models. Especially in the growth phase, young companies lack local financiers. The future fund closes this gap. The deputy chairwoman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group Nadine Schön explains:

“Start-ups are and will remain important drivers of innovation in our economy. If we want to use the current crisis as an opportunity, then we cannot do without this innovation potential. This requires the right financial framework.

With the future fund, we will create a strong instrument over the next ten years that can supply start-ups with capital from Germany and Europe and keep added value domestically. The key is: The 10 billion is purely state money. This sum is leveraged with the money from investments. Overall, we arrive at a volume that will definitely be three to four times as high in the end. For comparison: France’s fund total – government and private investors together – 5 billion euros.

As a Union group, we believe it is right that the fund should consist of various components. Central to us is the fund of funds, which should make it attractive for institutional investors to invest in venture capital. It is absurd that millions of funds, foundations and insurance companies have not yet been used for the growth of innovative companies. That needs to be changed. After years of discussing the subject, we are now tackling precisely this. Another important facet of the fund are the growth facilities, in particular the capital requirements in the scaling phase are addressed directly. We will take a closer look at the instrument of ‘managed accounts’. Here it depends on the exact design.

Overall, the future fund is an excellent premium with which we are courageously tackling the needs of start-ups in Germany and Europe. We look forward to the discussion on the specific structure of the fund. The most important signal for today: We are moving forward!

We have to ensure that the know-how of the startups and thus also the highly qualified jobs remain in Germany. The future fund makes an important contribution to this. “
