Southfield, MI- Today, U.S. Representative Brenda L. Lawrence (MI-14), issued the following statement after President Trump’s twitter barrage against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer following a months long plot to kidnap the Democratic Governor and violently overthrow the state’s government before the November presidential election.
“I am thankful and glad to hear that Governor Whitmer and her family are safe and sound, and I applaud the work of our federal, state, and local law enforcement officers for taking these threats seriously and working to apprehend all suspects involved.”
“However, I hope the President understands that his words matter. Instead of condemning the dangerous plot to kidnap an elected official, President Trump took to Twitter to attack Governor Whitmer. When Governor Whitmer was working to protect all Michiganders from the coronavirus pandemic, the President tweeted “LIBERATE MICHIGAN.” When provided with the opportunity last week to condemn White supremacists, President Trump urged everyone to ‘stand back and stand by.’ At a time when we should be collectively working to overcome the coronavirus and keeping our communities safe, this President is giving life to violent extremist groups. I will continue to stand by our Governor and the work she is doing to protect all Michiganders.”
