Federal Environment Ministry sets up coordination office
All federal authorities are to become climate neutral by 2030. With immediate effect, they will be supported by the “Coordination Office for Climate-Neutral Federal Administration”, which is now part of the Federal Environment Ministry. As an initiator, it develops – together with the federal authorities – guidelines that apply to all institutions. It also creates specific tips and guidelines that help ensure that daily administrative work, buildings, canteens, business trips and events no longer cause greenhouse gas emissions in the future. Other administrations, companies and citizens can also benefit from this. Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze: 22050 all of Germany should be climate-neutral. The federal administration must set a good example on this path. That is why we will consistently gear our buildings, events, business trips, canteens and procurement towards climate protection over the next ten years. Our experience in the Federal Environment Ministry shows that there are many good examples and ideas for this. The coordination office helps to quickly make these and other best practices standard. ”The buildings and business trips of the federal administration alone currently cause around two to three million tons of greenhouse gases per year. In addition, there are emissions from commuting, equipment, events and canteens. According to the Climate Protection Act, the federal administration should be climate-neutral by 2030. She coordinates the involvement of all administrations. She also advises them with practical tips, monitors progress and makes suggestions for improvement. Other administrations, companies and private individuals can also benefit from the experience gained in this way. The Federal Environment Ministry has been working climate-neutral since this year, and emissions are falling continuously. The change in the vehicle fleet, the conversion of catering at events to purely vegetarian catering and the increased use of virtual event formats all contributed to this. The regulation introduced in September 2019 that priority should be given to using the train for business trips has also led to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The number of domestic flights in the fourth quarter of 2019 was promptly halved compared to the fourth quarter of 2018. This regulation has been in effect for all federal authorities since January 1, 2020, and the subordinate authorities of the BMU, the Federal Environment Agency, the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management and the Federal Office for Radiation Protection are to become climate-neutral by 2022. Until then, the necessary data must still be recorded. The federal administration’s climate neutrality should primarily be achieved by reducing emissions in its own houses, before the remainder is then offset by emission certificates from other countries. The part of the compensation is reduced step by step.
