Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze opens the annual conference of the European Sustainable Development Network ESDN on Monday, October 12, 2020, as part of the German EU Council Presidency. At the beginning of the decisive decade for implementing the goals of the United Nations’ Agenda 2030, the Federal Environment Ministry and ESDN are aligning this European conference with the European Green Deal as a sustainable future strategy for Europe. The speakers at the virtual conference on October 12th and 13th also include Chancellor Angela Merkel, UNDP boss Achim Steiner and the Executive Vice President of the EU Commission, Frans Timmermans. Svenja Schulze: “The European Green Deal connects Human issues such as the preservation of nature with the fight against climate change and the protection of human health. Successful politics think outside the box of the individual policy fields. This also includes always thinking about the social dimension. To do this, it is necessary to create new networks, take up new starting points, and forge new alliances together. That is also what we expect from this conference. ”Around 300 representatives from more than 30 countries will take part in the virtual conference due to the corona pandemic. In the run-up to the conference, the Federal Environment Ministry is organizing a European youth camp in which around 30 young people from 12 European countries discuss their expectations of the future of Europe. The results will be presented by the young people at the beginning of the ESDN conference and represent a central theme for the discussion. Schulze: “The European Green Deal is a future pact for the European Union. That is why it is so important to me that young people have a say in this matter. We put the demands of our youth camp at the center of the discussion at the conference. ”The European Sustainable Development Network ESDN is a network of experts in European ministerial administrations that was founded in 2002 and is responsible for sustainability strategies.
