From November 1, 2020, the prices of certain tobacco products change, as provided for in a decree on the retail prices of cigarettes, cigarillos, cigars and rolling tobacco published in the Official Journal on October 9, 2020.

Some brands reduce the price of the 20-unit package from € 9.50 to € 10, others from € 9.80 to € 10.30 and still others from € 10 to € 10.50.

The decree lists all the brands marketed in its annex. This nomenclature is also available on the website of the General Directorate of Customs and Indirect Duties [application / pdf – 0] .

To know: It is the tobacco companies who set the price of the pack, taking into account the evolution of taxes levied by the state (which represent about 80% of the price of the pack of cigarettes).

They can pass on the increase in these taxes, which increases the price of the package, or they can reduce their margins in order to gain market share, which causes the sale price to stagnate or even lower it.

The prices are then approved jointly by the Ministry of Solidarity and Health and the Ministry of Action and Public Accounts.

Reminder: In 2017, the Ministry of Solidarity and Health wanted to gradually increase the average price of a packet of cigarettes to € 10 before the end of 2020 in order to reduce tobacco consumption. Price is one of the disincentives for entry into tobacco consumption and is also a strong motivation to get smokers to quit.
