At the end of December 2018, due to an explosion of a gas cylinder in the village of Itatka, Tomsk Region, the house of the Frolov family caught fire. The whole family – parents and three children (the youngest of them is just over a year old) – suffered greatly. The 11-year-old eldest son Nikolai shielded his middle brother from fire and received severe burns on more than 75% of his body.

In early January, the Frolov family was taken by a specialized board of the Russian Emergencies Ministry to the burn center of the Volga Research Medical University in Nizhny Novgorod for treatment.

A year ago, the governor of the Tomsk region, Sergei Zhvachkin, handed the Frolov family the keys to a three-room apartment in the village of Tomsk, and also sent a petition to award the boy a state award.

By the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of September 21, 2020 No. 575, Nikolai Frolov, a student of the Itatsky secondary school of the Tomsk region, was awarded the medal “For courage in the fire”.

Nikolai continues to recover while he is homeschooled.
