In September, Secretary Azar traveled to Nashville, Tennessee to visit Vanderbilt University Medical Center to meet with staff and leadership overseeing Phase 3 clinical trials for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, and even speak with one of the volunteers undergoing the trial. The Secretary also discussed the safety protocols surrounding the trials, and emphasized the importance of ethnic and minority outreach to encourage diverse representation in vaccine clinical trials. Secretary Azar then toured SmileDirect Club to see another example of the private sector mobilization under President Trump’s whole-of-America approach, which involved a tour of their facility to learn how they are utilizing telehealth and see how they repurposed 3D printing machines to produce face shields for local frontline healthcare workers.
