WASHINGTON, D.C.– Today, Representative Donna Shalala (FL-27) issued the following statement after conducting an unannounced inspection of Krome Processing Center to assess the conditions of the persons in custody at the facility:

“This morning, I conducted an unannounced inspection of the Krome Processing Center. Krome’s administration and staff cooperated in granting me total access to every unit of the facility and answered all of my questions. While it appears conditions have improved since a federal judge ordered the facility to implement measures to curb the spread of COVID-19, we must continue to hold ICE accountable, particularly when it comes to ensuring detained persons can communicate effectively with their legal representatives.”

“I will continue to attempt future periodic, unannounced inspections to guarantee that conditions do not deteriorate and that detainees are treated with dignity and humanity.”
