Labor market situation in the canton of Vaud
The unemployment rate in the canton of Vaud fell by 0.1 point to 4.6% at the end of September 2020.
The number of registered unemployed (1) in the canton of Vaud fell to 19,026 in September, or 630 people less than at the end of August 2020 (-3.2%). With a decline of 264 people, the number of job seekers (2) fell to 29,520 (-0.9%).
During the month of September 2020, the Vaud ORPs registered 3,157 new job seekers and canceled 3,432 files. The number of vacant workplaces announced by employers to the Vaudois ORPs stands at 3,813, down compared to August 2020 (-1.0%) but up compared to September 2019 (+ 0.6%).
This relative improvement in unemployment observed at the end of September should however be put into perspective with the situation last year, at the same period, when 13,858 unemployed (+5,168) and 22,990 job seekers ( +6530) were registered in the Vaudois ORP.
At the regional level, all the districts are experiencing a fall in their unemployment rate this month, except for the district of Nyon, which remains at 4.1%. With 0.3 point less, the district of the West of Lausanne (5.2%) recorded the strongest decline. The unemployment rate in other districts fell by 0.1 or 0.2 points. In terms of numbers, the districts of Lausanne (-211 unemployed) and West Lausanne (-103) show the most marked declines.
The number of beneficiaries of the integration income (RI) registered with an ORP amounted to 2,484, down 48 people in one month (-1.9%) and 184 people in one year (-6, 9%).
As SECO confirms in its monthly publication, if the canton of Vaud practiced like the majority of the cantons, its unemployment rate would be reduced by 0.5 point and would reach 4.1%. Indeed, the canton of Vaud is one of the only cantons to list unemployed people at the end of their entitlement: it has 74% of all social assistance recipients registered as unemployed in Switzerland.
