Guest overnight stays, August 2020 49.6 million overnight stays -14.2% on the same month last year

WIESBADEN – The effects of the Corona crisis on tourism in Germany made themselves felt in August 2020 as well. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) according to preliminary results, there were 49.6 million in August 2020 Overnight stays domestic and foreign guests a decrease of 14.2% compared to August 2019.

Local guests registered with guests from abroad Accommodation establishments 4.7 million overnight stays in August. This corresponds to a decrease of 56.0% compared to the same month last year. With 44.9 million overnight stays, the development of domestic guests is better, but here too the numbers are 4.7% lower than in August 2019.

From January to August 2020, the accommodation providers recorded a total of 212.2 million overnight stays (-37.4% compared to the same period in the previous year). Only 187.2 million overnight stays by domestic guests were recorded during this period (-32.5%). The drop in the group of foreign guests is even more pronounced: 25.0 million overnight stays meant a decrease of 59.3%.

Methodological notes All information relates to accommodation establishments (hotels, inns and guest houses, holiday accommodations and similar accommodation facilities, campsites and other tourism-related accommodation) with at least ten beds.
