Dear Madam President! Dear Minister, Dear colleagues! Dear colleagues! Dear Ladies and Gentlemen! We have always rightly emphasized that our healthcare system is one of the best in the world and how well the many employees in this area take care of us all around the clock. This pandemic shows that this assessment is correct.

(Applause from the CDU / CSU)

This not only applies to hospitals, laboratories and general practitioners’ practices, but also to the public health service. But we want to get even better. That is why we will hire 5,000 new employees in the health authorities in the future. I would like to thank everyone who was committed day and night and, despite their own risk of infection, helped in the pandemic and who are still helping. As several previous speakers have already said, we cannot appreciate this work enough. Many thanks also from this point!

(Applause from the CDU / CSU, the SPD, the FDP and the BÜNDNIS 90 / DIE GRÜNEN)

Working conditions, personnel keys, working hours and also the payment, all of these remain tasks for us. Because one thing is clear: Young people have to be motivated to pursue careers in the healthcare sector. Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn acted courageously and centrally managed the purchase of protective equipment and ventilators. I think that was correct at the time. We have made billions available to relieve the burden on hospitals. Because the hospitals had to completely shift their focus as a result of the pandemic, we will invest 11.5 billion euros this year. We must not forget that we also reached capacity limits in the spring and hospital operators had sleepless nights because neighboring hospitals were initially not ready to accept patients from overcrowded Covid-19 clinics. We shouldn’t forget that.

Long-term care insurance will also receive around 1.8 billion euros this year to deal with the additional burdens caused by the pandemic. By the end of the year, the health budget for this year will have almost tripled to around 41 billion euros.

In the future, it will also be about financing the corona tests, which are done daily. We are providing 5 billion euros here. This is currently the most important state option not to get another nationwide lockdown. We are budgeting 1.1 billion euros for personal protective equipment and pharmaceuticals.

At the same time, we are increasing our contribution to the World Health Organization again. I would also like to expressly thank my co-rapporteur Sonja Steffen for her commitment.

(Applause from the CDU / CSU and the SPD)

Diseases know no boundaries. This was shown recently by Ebola. Today we are more dependent than ever on a functioning World Health Organization. Those in this House who have so far criticized the contributions to the WHO in every budget consultation must think twice. The WHO was founded in 1948 to fight diseases worldwide so that we in Germany can also live healthy. This task, ladies and gentlemen, has not changed to this day.

(Applause from the CDU / CSU and the SPD as well as from members of the FDP)

Despite the increased corona burden, the health budget will continue to fulfill its tasks in health care and prevention as well as in research and public health in the coming year. We are providing the Robert Koch Institute, the Paul Ehrlich Institute and the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices with the necessary funds that are urgently needed in this situation.

Of course, we MEPs in particular have to ensure that we have balanced budgets again in the long term once the pandemic is over. It is also important to me that we continue projects like the country doctor program. In the budget consultations I will, among other things, advertise that we do even more in this area in the future to ensure that the population continues to be supplied with doctors in rural areas.

(Applause from the CDU / CSU and the SPD)

Ladies and gentlemen, our Chancellor warned yesterday that we could risk our previous successes with the pandemic if we are not together careful and prevent infections. Of course, we cannot guarantee that the current measures – keep your distance, wear a mask, wash your hands, ventilate and use the Corona app – are sufficient to offer one hundred percent protection. But what are the alternatives? Seen in the light: none or only worse, as long as no effective drugs or no effective vaccine are available. So let’s hold on! We are 100 meters from the goal. Of course we mustn’t unsettle people, but no serious scientist can deny that Covid-19 is much more dangerous than ordinary flu.

Ladies and gentlemen, the history of this world is rich in false prophets. Following them always led to ruin. Above all, I wish you health for the future and the wisdom to be able to distinguish correct specialists from false prophets.

Thank you very much.

(Applause from the CDU / CSU and the SPD)
