The Antarctic Weddell Sea is protected by a large majority

Today, Thursday, the motion to put the Antarctic Weddell Sea under protection is up for vote in parliament. The environmental policy spokeswoman for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group Marie-Luise Dött explains:

“It is extremely gratifying that there is a large majority in the German Bundestag that supports the protection of the unique ecosystem of the Antarctic Weddell Sea.

With a protected area surface of around 2.2 million square kilometers, it would be the largest marine protected area in the world. In addition, the Weddell Sea Conservation Area would be a great opportunity for the international community to come a big step closer to the goal of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). This calls for ten percent of the world’s oceans to be protected by 2020.

At the same time, it is an opportunity to underpin the ‘promise for nature’ to strengthen global biological diversity, which heads of state and government from more than 60 countries made on September 28, 2020 with a concrete measure. “
