It is expected that by 2023 electric buses will make up a third of Moscow’s ground transport.

Electric buses are not only more comfortable than buses, but also help solve the environmental problems of the metropolis. “We see how the environment is changing, because passenger transport and personal transport are getting better. Still, cars are being added every year in terms of environmental friendliness. And we should not be behind, but ahead. The Mayor of Moscow spoke with the driver of the 500th Moscow electric bus Marina Shibaeva. She said that the new machines made it much easier for her and her colleagues. “I worked on a trolleybus. And of course, there is a big difference in operation. The rods do not fall, there is no need to look out of the contact network: everything is working properly or not working properly. There is no need to change the embers to the top. It is much easier to work – we came, hung up the validator, fixed it, received the documents, filled it out and went quietly, ”said Marina Shibaeva.

According to her, passengers are also happy with the new public transport, sometimes they specially wait for the electric buses at stops, allowing buses of the same route. And the drivers like the comfort and ergonomics of the cab, the ease of control, a quick set of speed and a smooth stop of the car. It takes 10-15 minutes to charge the electric bus at the final stop – this is exactly the time during which drivers rest between flights. And in the cold season, according to Marina Shibaeva, electric buses performed well enough.

“They are improving every year, but we listen to your comments, suggestions, refine the model. We will create our own assembly plant in Moscow and will refine the Moscow model with some nuances and so on. The car that was two years ago still has differences in design from today’s one, ”added Sergei Sobyanin.

The first electric buses entered the streets of the city in the fall of 2018. Under the terms of the contracts, in 2018–2019, domestic manufacturers GAZ and KamAZ supplied 300 electric buses to Moscow. The delivery of another 300 electric buses is planned for this year, of which 200 have already entered the line. Thus, the capital’s electric bus fleet has become the largest in Europe. For comparison, there are 300 electric buses in London, 259 in Paris, 200 in Berlin and 164 in Amsterdam.

Today electric buses serve 36 routes. Since the beginning of their work, they have carried over 55 million passengers and covered more than 22 million kilometers on the roads of Moscow.

The Moscow electric bus is capable of accommodating 85 passengers and has 30 seats or more. Due to the low floor level, the presence of a ramp, a storage area and places for visually impaired people with a guide dog, using electric buses is convenient for everyone, including passengers with limited mobility.

Moscow electric bus is an environmentally friendly mode of transport. It has climate control, USB ports for charging mobile devices and media screens.

Electric buses replenish their energy reserves within six to 10 minutes using ultra-fast charging stations at terminal stops. The city has already installed 100 charging stations. The power reserve is 40-50 kilometers.

The design of electric buses is constantly being improved. This year, the city is purchasing the third generation of electric buses. Compared to previous versions, they include:

– separate climate control for driver and passengers is provided;

– thermal curtains of doors and side windows were modernized;

– the floor covering was replaced with a more wear-resistant one, the pattern imitates a parquet board;

– soft panels are installed in the center of the cabin, on which passengers can lean their elbows when riding while standing;

– a system of automated passenger counting was installed;

– built-in all-round cameras;

– there are speakers to inform visually impaired passengers about the direction of travel;

– equipped with a multimedia electric bus control system – the driver can control the operation of the car directly from the tablet on the dashboard. Online data is transmitted to Mosgortrans servers. In the future, this will make transport control automatic.

The use of the new type of transport allows to reduce operating costs, simplify the maintenance of rolling stock (service life – 15 years under the terms of a service contract), reduce the level of harmful emissions, reduce the level of noise and vibration in the cabin by 30 percent compared to buses.

Under service contracts, manufacturers are responsible for the full functionality of rolling stock and charging stations for 15 years of their operation. In addition, suppliers assume all the risks and costs of purchasing parts and components.

Transport experts praised the launch of electric buses in Moscow. Last year, innovative transport won the National Motion Formula award in the Best Passenger Transport Solution category. The Moscow electric bus also received the national award “Car of the Year in Russia – 2019”.

In the future, Mosgortrans intends to abandon the purchase of diesel buses (with the exception of vehicles for mobilization needs) and purchase only environmentally friendly electric vehicles, including electric buses and trams.

Another 400 electric buses will be delivered to Moscow next year. By the end of 2023, it is planned to increase the fleet of electric buses to 2,300 units, which will make up a third of the capital’s ground transport fleet.

Taking trams into account, about 40 percent of the capital’s land transport will switch to electric traction. And by 2030, the entire Mosgortrans park should become green, that is, absolutely environmentally friendly. The example of Moscow is followed by such cities as St. Petersburg, Vladivostok and Samara. Test trials were carried out in Khabarovsk and Kaliningrad.

Electric bus: made in Moscow

In 2019, the Moscow Government and KamAZ PJSC signed an Agreement on the implementation of a project to create a production of electric buses in the capital on the basis of the Sokolniki Railway Car Repair and Construction Plant (SVARZ).

Now work is underway to modernize the production facilities of the plant with an area of ​​six thousand square meters.

The production cycle at this enterprise will include about 20 assembly operations, including the installation of doors, traction equipment, seats and handrails, interior trim, as well as – not less important – computer diagnostics, adjustment and running-in of electric buses. The technological production cycle will include only environmentally friendly operations.

KamAZ will open a production of electric buses and a development center in Moscow

The enterprise will create about 100 new high-tech jobs for specialists whose responsibilities include control of automated processes.

The production of electric buses in Moscow will reduce the time for assembly, delivery and maintenance of vehicles and save on logistics. As a result, the cost of the electric bus will decrease by five to seven percent.

It is expected that the Sokolniki Railway Car Repair and Construction Plant will produce 400 electric buses annually. The first electric bus assembled in Moscow should roll off the assembly line at the beginning of 2021.

In addition, this winter, manufacturers are planning to present a prototype electric accordion bus with a capacity of at least 135 passengers and 38 seats.
