On the Day of the Commander of a Surface, Submarine and Aircraft, the Peter the Great Central Naval Museum in St. Petersburg hosted the grand opening of the “Ship Commander” exhibition, timed to coincide with this memorable date.

Since the inception of the Russian Navy (1696), one of the key figures in its organizational structure has been the ship’s commander. The importance of the captain (commander) of a ship was already mentioned in the Petrovsky Naval Regulations of 1720, where he was equated with the governor or commandant of the fortress. In the next three centuries, the commanders of the ships of the domestic fleet, as a rule, performed their duties with dignity, directed the actions of the crew in battle, showing fortitude, courage and heroism, took care of their subordinates, earning the right to be called father-commanders. The names of many commanders are inscribed in golden letters in the annals of the Russian and Soviet fleets and today they are role models.

The day of the commander of a surface, submarine and air ship was established in the Russian Federation at the initiative of a number of veteran organizations and at the request of the regional public organization of admirals and generals of the Navy “Admirals Club”. This initiative was supported by the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky, who in 2007 issued an order “On the introduction of the annual holiday of the Day of the Commander of the Navy ship.” This order ordered to celebrate the Day of the commander of a surface, submarine and air ship on October 8, the day when, according to the Julian calendar, the Battle of Navarino took place in 1827. The fact of the presence of naval aviation in the modern fleet was also taken into account, and therefore the commanders of the aircraft were not forgotten.

The exhibition includes exhibits from the collection of the Peter the Great Central Naval Museum: portraits of heroes, prominent ship commanders, paintings (including works by renowned artists Ivan Aivazovsky, Alexei Bogolyubov, Vladimir Borovikovsky), graphic works, models of surface ships, submarines and aircraft, personal weapons, photographs, documents and much more. Together, they recreate the image of the commander of a ship of the Russian fleet, which is entrenched in the minds of Russians.
