The German Research Foundation (DFG) congratulates Professor Dr. Reinhard Genzel for the Nobel Prize in Physics 2020. The scientist from the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching receives this year’s award together with his British colleague Roger Penrose and his American colleague Andrea Ghez for their respective research on black holes, such as the Royal Swedish Academy in Stockholm announced today: DFG President Professor Dr. Katja Becker said: “The DFG is very pleased with Reinhard Genzel, who stands for outstanding knowledge-driven research on one of the most fundamental questions in our universe. We are particularly pleased that we awarded him the Leibniz Prize of the DFG in 1990 for the first groundbreaking research results in the same area, which together with a number of other breakthroughs have now led to the Nobel Prize. ”The Leibniz Prize was already awarded to Genzel especially his work on black holes. With them he was able to show that an invisible and extremely massive object dominates the orbits of the stars in the center of our galaxy. Due to his increasingly precise observations, a supermassive black hole is now more than ever the most plausible explanation. He achieved his scientific breakthroughs with the help of high-precision measuring devices in the infrared range developed by his work group, which are used on the world’s best telescopes. As early as 1990 he was one of the world’s leading scientists in the field of galaxy research.
