Cabinet decides to amend the Food and Feed Code

The Federal Cabinet decided on Wednesday to amend the Food and Feed Code. The agricultural policy spokesman for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, Albert Stegemann, and the responsible reporter Hans-Jürgen Thies explain:

Albert Stegemann: “In Germany today we have more healthy, safe and high quality food than ever before. To ensure that it stays that way, we have to guarantee the high quality standards when shopping on the Internet as well as in the supermarket or restaurant. It is therefore good and right that the cabinet today has comprehensively strengthened food safety in Germany.

With the modernization of food law, we are improving the traceability of food and feed. Information on traceability must be submitted electronically to the competent authorities within 24 hours. At the same time, we are creating up-to-date rules for monitoring online food retailing. This is especially important in times of the corona pandemic, as more people order their food at home via online providers. “

Hans-Jürgen Thies: “The draft law provides for the addition of regulations on online food trading to the Food and Feed Code. Consumers must be able to trust that food is in perfect condition. This principle must apply to all food – including products that are ordered over the Internet. Monitoring the increasing online trade in food is essential for consumer health protection. The law will make it possible to stop the marketing of harmful products on the Internet. “
