Tuesday, October 6, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal held a video conferencing meeting with the leadership of the Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations. The meeting was attended by the Government representatives, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to Ukraine Anka Feldhusen, the Chairman of the German Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations Oliver Hermes, Chairman of the German-Ukrainian Chamber of Industry and Commerce Alexander Markus and CEOs of German companies.
During the video conference, the sides discussed, inter alia, ways to improve the investment and business climate, infrastructure projects, energy efficiency initiatives and digitalization.
Denys Shmyhal dwelled on that Germany is a strategic partner of Ukraine in Europe and noted that about 2,500 German companies operate in Ukraine.
“We praise the contribution of German business to the development of the national economy. Our countries have staunchest economic relations and Germany is one of Ukraine’s key partners in trade and investment, ” the Prime Minister said, adding that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Ukraine continues to implement structural reforms to improve the business climate.
The Prime Minister noted that one of the instruments to improve the business environment in Ukraine is the digital transformation reform. The day before, the second Diia (Action) Summit took place, where new e-services and documents were presented on the “Diia” (Action) portal.
“This platform is designed to make relations between the state, citizens and business easier. Yesterday, the President of Ukraine announced that from September next year, no institution of the central executive body will require any paper from citizens and businesses. This is one of the steps that will not only simplify and speed up the provision of services, but also allow Ukraine to eradicate a large layer of corruption, ” the Prime Minister stressed.
The PM also placed a special emphasis on the development of mobile communications and the Internet, including the expansion of 4G coverage by 95% territory of Ukraine and the establishment of international highways with mobile Internet.
According to the Head of Government, the development of the logistics industry remains an important priority. The Prime Minister stressed that the pandemic gave Ukraine the opportunity to become a “logistics hub.” “That is why it is very important for us today, while developing roads, which envisages the development of concession toll roads, to develop multimodal transportation. We have also approved a program for the development of inland waterways. All these steps will enable Ukraine to reach the next stage of logistics development, “said Denis Shmyhal.
The Prime Minister noted that Ukraine and Germany have good prospects in the field of energy partnership. “At the end of August, we signed an agreement on energy cooperation. We have several important areas of cooperation: in the field of fair transformation of coal regions and the implementation of joint projects in the field of hydrogen technology, “said the Prime Minister.
Denys Shmyhal also noted that next year the Government plans to implement a strategy for the development of land reclamation in the southern regions of Ukraine, which will allow to triple the yield. According to the PM, it is planned to develop it, in particular, through concession agreements. The Prime Minister invited German business to participate in the development of such projects.
Within the course of the meeting, the Head of Government expressed hope that the 4th economic conference, scheduled for March 2021 in Berlin, in synergy with the German-Ukrainian Chamber of Industry and Commerce will be held according to schedule. Denys Shmyhal also invited the leadership of the German Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations to pay a visit to Kyiv.
In turn, the German side stressed that Europe should act together in order to overcome the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and noted that they will visit Kyiv as soon as the epidemic situation allows.
