Make an overdue decision in the interests of the Bundeswehr

Today, Monday, the Defense Committee will hold a public hearing on the subject of the “International, constitutional and ethical assessment of a possible arming of remote, unmanned aircraft of the Bundeswehr”. The defense policy spokesman for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, Henning Otte, explains:

“It is our duty to optimally equip the soldiers who risk their lives every day for the security of Germany. This also includes being able to protect them as best as possible in the event of a threat. For this reason, the use of armed drones has long been introduced by many armed forces and is a natural part of their equipment. It would be immoral to deny our soldiers technology that protects people and lives.

In the coalition agreement we had agreed with the SPD to decide on the arming of drones after a ‘detailed international, constitutional and ethical assessment’. After several events organized by the Federal Ministry of Defense with experts from politics, science and the military, we are concluding this process with today’s public hearing. It is important for the troops that the overdue decision to arm drones can finally be made.

We have to keep a close eye on developments in a constantly changing world, especially when it comes to new technologies in the military field. We have to actively shape technological change and see opportunities in it. Only in this way can we ensure that the soldiers of the Bundeswehr can carry out their work for our country in the best possible way. And only in this way will they be able to defend our country in the future. “
