WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Susan Wild (PA-07) released the following statement regarding the passage of the updated Heroes Act in the House. In this comprehensive package are several measures Wild has championed, including provisions of the RESTAURANTS Act, of which Wild was an original cosponsor, and elements of Wild’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers Coronavirus Relief Act of 2020, bipartisan legislation to help expand access to child care services through the remainder of the COVID-19 emergency.

“Over the past several months, I have spoken with hundreds of folks in our community – business owners, frontline workers, parents, teachers, community leaders, and so many others – about the unprecedented hardship this pandemic and economic crisis have brought them. I’ve heard directly from folks in my district about the urgency of providing tailored relief to the restaurant community, substantially increasing funding for food assistance programs, providing robust funding to state and local governments so vital services can continue, delivering additional direct financial relief and emergency rental relief for struggling families, guaranteeing paid sick leave to all workers, and securing stronger workplace protections for frontline workers across our economy. Today, I am proud to see this legislation pass as a direct response to these needs.

“I am especially pleased to see critical efforts I have led reflected in this legislation including expansion of 21st Century Community Learning Centers allowing them to operate during traditional school hours as a key way to support children’s academic needs and increase child care for working families.

“This legislation also includes substantial efforts to provide sustained support to our main street businesses to get through, and recover from, this economic crisis. Back in June, I was a leading cosponsor of legislation to save the restaurant industry and re-employ millions of workers nationwide, and I am proud to see it included in tonight’s package along with provisions of a bipartisan bill I led to make some key enhancements to the Paycheck Protection Program to create the flexible relief our businesses desperately need.

“While I am encouraged by the accomplishments of the negotiations, reflected through this package which would provide long-awaited, direct relief to the American people, I am once again disappointed that we have not been able to reach a consensus with Senate and White House leadership. I sincerely hope that the White House, both chambers, and both parties, will be able to reach a bipartisan agreement in the spirit of this legislation to provide real relief to the American people.

“American lives and livelihoods are truly on the line – and every single member of the House and Senate – regardless of party – is responsible to folks who need this immediate, comprehensive relief to get by. We each took an oath to serve the American people, not political interests, and we have do so urgently.”
