Lower Saxony’s top research has good chances in the global race for quantum technologies. The first meeting of the steering group took place yesterday evening in Hanover at the Ministry of Science and Culture.

Quantum technologies promise a wide range of applications with unprecedented precision and performance. This enormous future potential for industry and society was recognized early in Lower Saxony: More than 220 million euros have flowed into quantum research in the last ten years. This means that quantum research in Lower Saxony is now at the top level. Now the leading universities, research institutions, companies and the state of Lower Saxony have joined forces in a new alliance with the programmatic name “Quantum Valley Lower Saxony” (QVLS). The goal: to bundle the excellent expertise of more than 400 scientists in the participating institutes in order to develop an ion trap quantum computer by 2025 – an achievement with which Lower Saxony will impressively strengthen its internationally outstanding position as a research and development location for quantum technologies . Yesterday evening the steering committee met for its first meeting in the Ministry of Science. The founding institutions of the new research network “Quantum Valley Lower Saxony” are the Leibniz University of Hanover, the TU Braunschweig, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), the Albert Einstein Institute of the Max Planck Society, the recently founded Institute for Satellite Geodesy and Inertial Sensors of the German Aerospace Center (DLR-SI) and Sartorius AG. With ion trap technology, the researchers are using one of the currently most promising approaches to develop scalable quantum computers. The consolidation of all the necessary expertise under one roof – from nanotechnology to quantum algorithms or the production of ion trap chips – is a convincing unique selling point in a global comparison. The aim of the state initiative “Quantum Valley Lower Saxony” is not just to lead in to further expand research. With its own office, which will go into operation on January 1, 2021, the technology transfer in the economy and especially in the start-up scene should receive a strong boost. Both basic research and industrial value creation are the prerequisites for conquering top positions in quantum technologies and especially in quantum computing. It is also this global race that requires a fast pace of action. That is why the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture and the Volkswagen Foundation support the “Quantum Valley Lower Saxony” project with funds from the Lower Saxony advance. At the same time, the alliance is applying for additional funding from the stimulus package and the federal government’s funding programs for quantum technologies. This has recently been impressively confirmed to us in the Excellence Strategy by international teams of experts. Now it is a matter of being at the forefront of application and transfer. Lower Saxony advance: According to § 8 paragraph 2 of the statutes of the Volkswagen Foundation, the “advance” consists of three parts : It includes, on the one hand, the equivalent of the annual dividend on a nominal 77.3 million Euro VW shares, to which the Volkswagen Foundation is entitled from the participation of the State of Lower Saxony in Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, and the income from the investment of 35.8 million Euro from a contract with the state of Lower Saxony from 1987 as well as ten percent of the remaining funds available.
