Source: DOSB After 30 years of German unity, DOSB President Alfons Hörmann draws a positive conclusion for sport, but also shows what still needs to be done to ensure a stable future.

“What belongs together has grown together,” concludes Alfons Hörmann over the past 30 years after reunification, in which the two different sports systems in East and West were also merged. “The most important development from my point of view is that the competition between the systems has replaced was created by a SPORTDEUTSCHLAND in which balance and values are right, ”emphasizes Hörmann. “In sport in particular, sustainable relationships have been established between organizations and people that could never have existed in the divided form of the country. For most people in sports – whether East or West – the reunification was a groundbreaking event for their future lives. The basis of the almost 90,000 clubs, their valuable contribution to keeping our society together and exemplifying values such as fair play, encounter, health, inclusion and integration, enjoyment of performance and exercise, has just as much radiance as the other side of the coin, the great role models at the top. Team Germany is still fighting for successes and medals, but the focus is increasingly on the how: Has the success been achieved cleanly and fairly, how do the athletes from Team D act on behalf of us all and do we live up to the role model? With the competitive sports reform passed in 2016, 30 years after reunification, we are well on the way to making the nationwide sports system fit for the future. Because the positive aspects of the competitive sports legacy of the GDR have meanwhile largely been used up. All of this will only lead to a good future if the club’s base and breadth are always taken into account. We are very concerned about the condition of the infrastructure in the sports facility area, because the renovation backlog of sports facilities in the east and west is one of the main obstacles to the clubs being able to provide their valuable services to the community without restriction. The base of the associations and municipalities is urgently waiting for help from the federal states and especially from the federal government, because the effects of the former “Golden Plans” are getting on in years and often no longer acceptable conditions can be determined on site. At the moment, however, the crisis triggered by the corona pandemic is initially about securing a stable future for the structures in sports Germany that have now been developed over decades. ”(Source: DOSB)
