Reform projects must now be pushed ahead
Regarding the budget for the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection contained in the government draft for the 2021 budget, the consumer protection commissioner of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, Sebastian Steineke, explains:
“According to the budget draft, the budget of the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection is to increase to EUR 952.2 million next year. Compared to the 2020 budget, this is an increase of EUR 32.4 million and thus around 3.5 percent. This is a good and important signal and shows that we as a coalition continue to care about consumer issues. I am pleased that the draft budget continues to contain a provision of 113.7 million euros to make compensation payments to consumers affected by the bankruptcies of Thomas Cook and Tour Vital.
We now hope very soon for a draft from the Federal Ministry of Justice for the urgently needed reform of package travel law. When it comes to reimbursement of ticket prices for canceled flights, we definitely have to prevent consumers from getting any money because airlines refer to their economic situation and refuse to reimburse despite claims. If the airlines do not meet us here, we will have to talk soon about how we can generally improve the civil law enforcement of consumer claims in air traffic for the future. As a Union, we have already made proposals on the due dates for payments.
One of the coalition’s projects that is still pending in the area of consumer protection is the law on fair consumer contracts. The sticking point here is the regulation on contract periods planned by the Federal Ministry of Justice. The proposed legal shortening has not only met with a lot of criticism from the companies concerned, it has also not been agreed in this form. This abbreviation is met with widespread opposition among consumers. With regard to the other important topics provided for in the law, such as unauthorized telephone advertising, I urgently advise you to accelerate the consultations and to compromise or, alternatively, to remove the regulation on the contract periods. In any case, the consumers will not be helped if we do not get any further here. “
