Source: Charite – University Medicine Berlin Prof. Dr. Christian Drosten has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his extraordinary achievements. The director of the Institute for Virology at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin received the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class today from Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Bellevue Palace. Under the motto “United and there for one another”, the Federal President paid tribute to 15 citizens for their exceptional achievements . He praised Prof. Drosten for the outstanding role he plays in combating the COVID-19 pandemic. He was able to identify the pathogen as a SARS virus very quickly and to develop a detection as early as January. In addition, he provided important and globally recognized knowledge about the infection process and communicated this to the public with his weekly podcast. Drosten had already received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon in 2005 for identifying the original SARS coronavirus. The Charité board chairman Prof. Dr. Heyo K. Kroemer congratulated the virologist on the second merit award: “Prof. Drosten is without a doubt one of the leading scientific minds nationally and internationally in combating the greatest health crisis of our time. I am very pleased that his tireless commitment to research, science communication and scientific advice has been prominently recognized. ”The NDR podcast“ The Coronavirus Update ”with Prof. Drosten has now been viewed over 60 million times and has two Grimme Online Awards received. This illustrates the great need of the public for comprehensible information and classification of the complex relationships and developments during the pandemic. For his outstanding communication skills, Prof. Drosten has already been honored with the special prize of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Stifterverband, as well as the special prize of the German Radio Prize. In addition, he recently received the honorary award of the professional association of communicators (BdKom) and the KlarText special award for science communication from the Klaus Tschira Foundation.

Prof. Dr. Christian DrostenChristian Drosten first studied chemical engineering and biology in Dortmund and Münster, and later human medicine in Frankfurt am Main. After receiving his doctorate in medicine in 2003, he headed a working group at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg, before he was appointed head of the Institute for Virology at the Bonn University Hospital in 2007. Since 2017 Prof. Drosten has been director of the Institute for Virology on the Charité Mitte campus and at the same time professor at the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH). He heads the virology department at Labor Berlin – Charité Vivantes GmbH, is deputy coordinator at the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) and spokesman for the National Research Network on Zoonotic Infectious Diseases. In addition, he is the scientific director of the interdisciplinary center Charité Global Health.
